A first in France and Europe: teas of origin from around the world were tasted between June 19th and June 26th by experts and taste enthusiasts of French taste to elect the best teas in this one-of-a-kind competition, dedicated to specialty teas – harvested whole-leaf, unblended and unflavored.

113 teas from 15 producing countries were subjected to the sagacity of the tea experts, who retained only 52 teas spread in 7 categories. Among these, the taste enthusiasts then elected the most exceptional teas: 32 teas received a medal in gold, silver or bronze while the other teas received a Diplôme Produit Gourmet.

Rare and new origins like Hawaii or the Netherlands, or in search of recognition like Vietnam and Indonesia have been able to compete with leading tea-producing countries such as China and India.

The best-rated tea families are white teas and light oolongs, lauded teas that have delighted connoisseurs and amateurs alike. In contrast, black teas seemed to show less appeal. Can we see a change in trend ? Only the future will tell…

The awards ceremony took place on July 10th in Paris, attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the national and international press, personalities of the gastronomomy community and many enthusiasts. Participating producers and distributors had a chance to share experiences around a round table, demonstrations of tea masters and of course tastings.
